I was looking for diff ratio--supposedly on the left side of axle. No dice.

On the diff cover there was PN 1023610; on the diff itself PN 1023597. I couldn't find reference to these numbers anywhere. Anyone?

Also I noticed a plug connected to diff cover. What is the purpose of this?

A 1989 740T with automatic has a 3.73 ratio, and a 1989 740T with manual transmisison has a 3.54 ratio.

You can use solvent to expose this tag on the rear or the left axle tube,

John/Turbogreasel--thanks for info 700

BTW John, I was rolling around on the concrete garage floor looking for this tag. I think it must have disappeared since it was nowhere to be seen on left axle.

Most of the tags are covered with undercoating, and it takes 10-15 minutes of rubbing with a solvent soaked rag to expose one.

plug is electronic speed sensor

jack up one side of the back, spin the driveshaft however many turns it take to get the tire around once, and divide that by two for your final drive ratio.

search the FAQ for possible ratios, there is a list there, then round to the nearest one of those.
