DIY-Make your own Strut tower braces for $2.00(Found this story very interesting)

I've been beefing up the suspension on my 91 740 NA and wanted to find all the low buck low cost ways of doing this just short of buying the package from IPD.

I've found links to a 240 site and read posts of a guy who put 2 sets of sways on his 240 wagon(painted them neon green so we'd know he was running two sets)he says it's just as stable if not more so that IPD's beefier sway bar sets. Might give that a try?!

Back to the topic:
I found from the FAQ section a link to someone who converted a non turbo car to a turbo car and his story of using 3/4" electrical conduit to make strut tower braces complete with pictures...al for $2.00 in electrical conduit and some custom bending techniques.
Quote:"Here are the details:

Parts: 10' of 3/4" electrical conduit from hardware store of choice (cost = $2)

Yes, thats right, you can have a strut brace (well, an upper at least) for the grand total of $2.00, and about 30 minutes of your time."

I know for lower chassis braces you can make one from flat steel iron drilled out in the right sections and bolted underneath.

Has anyone ever thought of this or tried it or completely thinks this is a waste of time?

I build quality truss type strut tower braces. The one in the picture is on a 960. They are quite rigid.

The problem I see with the brace in the picture is it attaches to the top of the nut on the strut cartridge. All loads on this $2 brace go through the strut mount and upper bearing. This type of cheap brace should attach to the chassis, not the top of the MacPherson strut assembly.

John is correct: the engineering of the loads in the instant brace is all wrong if they are routed through the strut mount. The purpose of the brace is to minimize differential movement between strut towers and that is where it has to be secured.

You're right gentlmen... this is absurd. I don't know what I was thinking....

Strut tower braces should contact the tower not the tops of the truts themselves....

what an idiot that guy was....

well, I can see how to make a model for someone to weld some up for me with a model brace with the electrical conduit.

anyways-
thanks for your time.
