Propshaft 120-130

Morning Chaps

Dropped the B20 into the Amazon this weekend and very nice it looks too!

Next thing is modifying the propshaft to accomodate the overdrive. Is it just a case of shortening the prop by the same length as the J type plus the bridging piece between the gearbox/overdrive? From which section, front or rear of the prop does the cut section come out of? Has anyone done this already? Has anyone got the overall length that the finished prop needs to be?

Many thanks in advance

Brian

I got a front driveshaft out of an overdrive 140 and it worked fine "as is".

Measure the old M40 from the bellhousing to the shaft flange. Measure the new M41 the same way. The difference is the amount that needs to come off the propshaft. Typically the cut is made immediately aft of the front U-joint.

And the measurements that people come up with seem to vary slightly as well, you shouldn't necessarily go on what anyone else said - but it is generally withing the 11.25 - 11.5 inch range. It doesn't have to be incredibly precise as there are splines between the trans and rear axle and the center support bearing can handle about 1/2 inch of back-and forth movement.

It comes out of the front section of the driveshaft - the distance from the center support bearing to the rear axle is unchanged.

A driveline shop will likely want the whole driveshaft to do a balance after cutting the front section.

I couldn't find a driveline shop that could balance the two sections of the shaft together -- something to do with the size of the center bearing -- so they balanced them separately. That worked out fine. They did have to do a bit of straightening on the rear shaft .
