Brake fluid container, open but sealed tight. Fluid good, or not?

Is there any controversy on this one? This question came to mind because I observed a brake fluid container sitting on a shelf in my garage. The vacuum being created inside the bottle had caused the side of the bottle to cave in. How can moisture enter into such a sealed environment.
Is there universal agreement on the need to avoid the use of brake fluid from a previously opened container?

R.

Look at the color. Clearer means better.

Conventional wisdom says dont' use it, 'specially since brake fluid is so cheap and vital..plus the new stuff (DOT 4) is supposed to be much better and less prone to H2O absorption than stuff made just a few years ago...however...if you are a frugal as I am, I know how tough it would be to discard the apparently 'safe' fluid which is vacuum-packed.

Good Luck

I agree. I hate throwing stuff out.

My normal response is that if I can't remember when I bought that bottle of brake fluid, I shouldn't use it - at least not in brakes!

Unless someone here can suggest an alternate use for it. I know it will loosen/remove paint, maybe it has some use as a solvent.

My guess is that the more volatile components have diffused through
the plastic and vaporized into the air leaving a heavier remainder behind.
Probably more viscous.
Won't have this problem with DOT5!
