Feature or Failure? I can't turn off my headlamps manually! 900

For some reason, the headlamp switch will not turn off my headlights. I generally drive with them on, but with all the maintenance I've been doing lately, it'd be nice if I could energize the system w/o the battery gettign run down. The headlights do turn off when I shut off the car (a nice feature to be sure) and they go off when I switch it to the running lights (middle position).

So is this some new feature? the owners manual says nothing about it...
or is my switch defective?

For what it's worth, the headlights on the 3 '93 945 cars that I maintain can all be shut off by turning the switch to the left (counter-clockwise)

DRL on a volvo that automatically shuts off it's lights seems silly. I always leave them on ,except during repairs.

There's no slot screw on the face, or under the know. Possibly on the back of the switch, but I didn't feel like prying it out again. I have found the dead-spot on the switch before, it's just so in-elegant for a volvo.

Funny thing is, this display array is almost identical to the array on my old 740s. Could I switch out the switch between an 86 740 GLE and a 95 940. Similarly, if I went to a junkyard, could I grab the switch out of a 960 and stick it in my 940?

We have a couple of ‘95s and a few times I had to pull the fuse. There is a tiny dead spot in the stitch handle that turns off the headlights.

My wife drives a 95 944 on whichthe DRL cannot be turned off. I believe that the DRL can only be turned of in the 960/90 series RWD cars.

Sounds like DRL or day time running lamps and they work much like you describe. As I recall the early ones had a little switch right in the face of the main headlamp switch. It looks like a little slot head affair, stick your pocket screwdirver in it and turn it 90 degrees and it should turn your lights back to conventional set up. I just took a look through the schematic books for DRL and I do not see them listed in there for 940,960, or 850. Seems kind of odd as I know they have them. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm???

That sounds like the "daytime running light" feature. There is a little slot screw head next to the light switch. It should be straight up/down. If you turn it counterclockwise to "\" then the headlights will only come on when you turn them on. It's in the owner's manual.
