I know '90 was a "bastard stepchild" year in terms of body styling for 740's, but the problem I (and Revolv in AZ) are having with replacing my grille is a real frustrating one, to say the least. I originally wanted to change my grille from chrome to black but have now gotten two replacement grilles- one labeled as from a '90 car and the other looks brand new- that don't fit my front end. Has anyone out there ever had that problem?? Andy from Revolv double checked the production year on my car after the first one didn't fit (2-90), but the second one they sent is just like the first- both grilles are slightly larger than my existing one and won't fit in the mounts; they overlap on the sides about an inch on either end. Could these grilles have come from a 760 or turbo car that may have a slightly different sized grille/front end? maybe even a 240?? How can I verify/confirm the right sized grille for my car?

Thanks, guys for your comments- McDuck, you've got me wondering now if the 90 740's ever came with black grilles; I have seen 240's with them- am I chasing a non-existent part??? If so, won't be nothing for me to sray a chrome grille ...(as soon as I can confirm I'm getting the right one!!) Appreciate the supplier recommendations, too; I have dealt with Revolv since the late 80's (my 81 240GL days) and have been generally pleased with them, but everyone's got their good/bad stories- no harm, no foul... I am going to check out these other guys, tho- had heard of Hirsch years ago, but never got anything from them.

Sure! The '90 740 turbo came with a black "eggcrate" grille. I passed a '90 745T the other day that had one. I knew it was a '90 because it said "Intercooler" on the tailgate and they stopped doing that in '91. In addition to that, my mechanic has a '90 745T that I've been stripping for him that had the eggcrate grille, but unfortunately the reason the car ended up as a parts car was that it had rearended another car :( Therefore the grille was smashed. Other then that, I've only seen '90s wearing chrome grills (GLs and GLEs). I helped my mecahanic replace the stereo in a '90 744 GL yesterday that had a chrome grill. So, if you want a black grille, you're looking for the grille out of a '90 740 TURBO. Your other choice, which shouldn't be too hard, would be to get the trim pieces that go under the headlights and lower grille mounts off a '91+ 740 or 940 (WITHOUT fog lights). Therefore you could use the grille off a '91+ 740 or 940 (without fogs) which is ALMOST the same as a '90 grill except for the lower mounting points and the edges of the '91+ grille are rounded. These trim pieces and grille may be easier to get then a '90 grille.... Also, the '91-'92 740 turbos came with a black version of the chrome grille (straight bars) if that's what you're looking for. The one on my '91 745T was smashed when I bought the car so I managed to fit a chrome one off a '90 (stuck out on the edges and I had to wire tie the bottom). I reciently replaced that grill with a chrome one off a '94 944 (Poor thing; At least it had 484K km on the odo) that I found in a junkyard. Fits perfectly. Anyway, I hope what I typed makes sense and I hope it helps!

I've seen '90 740Ts with black eggcrate grilles, so keep looking; one of my co-workers has a '90 745T, and my 744T has the Hydras off a '90 744T. Both have your grille.
Maybe you aren't aware that Revolvstore changed owners a couple of years ago; I'm not exactly sure when, but I was there last April with a friend who knows the previous owner (through the Studebaker club!), and they were giving bogus info over the counter.

A couple of good options here- thanks a lot, guys; I may just stick with my original one and paint the grille part black and color match the chrome frame to the body when I paint it later on this year (my ultimate plan in the first place); I just wanted to get another grille in case I jacked this one up in the process. Since I touched on the subject, has anyone ever taken the grilles apart and put them back together- looks to be just a couple of plastic fasteners on the top and bottom of the frame that can be removed to take the grille itself out. Only thing I don't know right now, is what to use to replace them- any suggestions? (I thought of small metal nut/bolts, but they could scratch the body- maybe small size plastic ones?)

McDuck, I didn't know that Revolv had changed owners- since I've only dealt with them over the phone/internet, they seemed ok to me and always got me the parts I was looking for. But, I do appreciate getting more of the picture (and that's why I keep an extensive list of parts suppliers, as I'm sure we all do, right?)

I haven't talked to Revolv yet about this latest grille (they were closed for the weekend by the time I found out) but they will be the first call I make Monday morning. I'll let you know what they say.

Yes, probably the '90 760, which is like later 940s, but does you no good, was the donor. That '90 940 grille is rare and the turbo black one the rarest.
