Stalling 200 1987

My 87 240DL runs fine, however as of last night, decided to stall whenever I shift into gear (auto). It immediately starts again with no problem, but the same occurs again.

I noticed a loss of power similar to that while running a couple weeks ago, but it lasted for only a second or two and has been fine since.

The fuses and all electrical connections appear to be fine. Is it a vacuum problem? I'm a bit stumped on this.

To those that helped, the answer is....

Air Mass Meter. The ducting was fine, but of the 7 sensors (or sensor rods - not sure how it works) I had 1 left. New AMM and the problem is gone...

The engine will normally lean to the right a little with torque load.

This shifting might open a crack in the accordian ducting between the AMM and the throttle body, causing a gulp of "false" (unmetered) air.
I'd remove that duct and look for cracks or holes on the underside.

Hello,

My first check would be the oxygen sensor. You can find the tips in the 700 FAQ section.

O2 sensor does not affect idle, stalling or starting, it merely fine tunes the mixture to reduce emissions. A car that is otherwise OK can run just fine without it. The real problem lies elsewhere.

Your idle speed should be 750 rpm and remain there after a momentary drop when putting into gear. If the idle speed control is not working and your base idle speed is already low it may stall.

What is your idle speed?

The idle speed flutters around 750, however even when I keep my foot on the gas (and thus revs up) when putting it into gear, it still stalls.

Additional theories from friends now also include the AMM and wiring harness.

Still investigating...
