is my A/C 134 or r12? 700

i know my volvo was originally equipped with r12. but how do i know if r134 has been retrofitted. the previous owner had no idea as there is a leak in the system and the A/C did not work. i am looking to fix it but i don't know what is in it

An 89 should be an R12 system, they didn't start using 134 until 93 I thought. My 89 Bertone is an R12 system and my 90 740 was an R12 as well. Good luck finding that stuff by the way, you have to be EPA certified to buy it.

i would assume that your a/c is 134 as of i have a 1987 740 gle and i have 134 it was not retrofitted that is what it came with. i cannot tell you what it is because this is only a guess and i have not seen your system. my only suggestiopn is take it to a mechanic and ask him if he could tell you.

I am not sure how to tell, But according to my friendly Volvo dealer (and my friendly non-volvo mechanic),retro fitting is very expensive. To start with they said every seal in the AC system needs to be replaced as r134 eats away at seals designed for r12. When My AC dies I think it will have to stay dead
