AMM & Sealant/Hole? 700 1989

On the AMM (007) and I noticed also on 020 (different car) there appears to be an area where sealant? is placed (by manufacturer) into what appears to be a small hole -- about 5mm in diameter or so. This is specifically located on the face of the black plastic piece(above the 007 stamp) which has the electrical connector on the front of it. It appears that on the 007 AMM the sealant has aged and may have some pin holes in it.

Anyone familiar with what the purpose is of this sealant? Is there a hole, screw, or something beneath?

Thanks!

Check with Art Benstein, I'll bet he knows.

Thanks Jim, but haven't the foggiest. I know what is being described, and it isn't the adjustment, just an air hole in the hermetically sealed plastic cover that looks like it was meant to fit a gas tube into. Here's my lame guess: The problems with the hybrid's oxidation in the early AMMs led to sealing and filling with nitrogen for excluding moisture or an inert gas to deal with the oxidation. I'm pretty sure it isn't being evacuated, as the cover is thin and not distorted inwards, and I've never heard one hiss when pulling it apart.

I'll ask my brother, whose career has included some expertise in hybrid reliability.

There is an adjustment there. Often fiddled with by mechanics trying to compensate for some shortcoming, I would never touch the thing. If you open an AMM there is a little spring in there that the screw acts on as I recall.
