looking for better perfomance with my 1982 244 GLT Turbo.... camshafts? new engine? 200

I recently purchased a 1982 244 GLT turbo in Portland OR and drove it up to my home in Anchorage Alaska.- It's oficially my new project car. the previous owner installed a better (but made by Volvo) liquid cooled turbo, and intercooler. The car is respectably quick for its age, and with 17" rims, flowmaster, billsteins, etc, its fun to drive. this is what I've been thinking: I figure I'll eventually put a few grand more into this car (I've already put in more than I expected) and I want to make sure I put my money in the right places. I don't have any major upgrades planned right now (to the engine at least, I need a paint job, audio system, etc) but I've been looking at camshafts (would you suggest the Turbo Performance cam or the VX performance from IPD? also I've heard something about the k- cam. what are the advantages?) and an adjustable cam gear. I'd like to keep the enigine I have (I don't have the know-how to switch engines yet, but if necessary I know someone who does) because I'm expecting it gets way better mileage than a V-8 conversion would give me. Not to say I get great mileage... I'd really like more low- end power, at least to begin with. But I've been thinking about a bigger turbo ( I know this won't help me with low-end) or a twin- turbo setup - I don't know if how/if a twin turbo would work on my car... but if anyone has any ideas on turbo makes, sizes, costs, installation, any of the above, I'd love to get some more information. what would a programmable fuel management system do for me?
I guess like everyone- I'm looking for biggest power increase for smallest cost. I just don't want to spend a bunch of money on modifying this engine, and then decide to switch engines or something. thanks for all your help.

Although my experience is purely subjective with no empirical data to support it, I think that the B230 intake manifold I swapped into my 84 244Ti made a difference, most noticeably I perceive that there's an improvement in throttle response. Pretty straightforward, involved a bit of cutting & welding together brackets for the throttle spool as mine's an automatic w/cruise. Cold start injector is a beastly thing to hook up (running to the bottom of the manifold) but it does fit - the line just reaches. I did the swap when I blew out my intake manifold gasket & decided it was time to rebuild my wiring harness, so everything came out anyhow. Cost? A few dollars for the intake manifold gasket, $10 for the used manifold (which I bead blasted & painted with Tremclad automotive paint, looks sharp & much cleaner installation than stock, IMHO). A pipe thread tap & some plugs wrapped in teflon tape took care of the injector ports - but you can just leave the injectors in there as long as the o-rings are good. I just wanted to eliminate the possibility of vacuum/boost leaks there, but before I did that I got some perplexed stares from the local Volvo gurus, since the injector harness was still in place, just tucked under the manifold. Makes one think about the possibility of water injection, doesn't it? Or using those injectors for additional fuel dumping at full boost/full throttle...

Sounds like a fun project. Turbobricks.org is the place for turbo performance discussion mild and wild. I frequent both boards. With a water cooled turbo and intercooler, you have the right raw material. The "staged" tuning process on TB is a neat path. Don't overlook Stage 0. That just means setting everything up to factory specs. Best return for the money includes 3" exhaust, Term 11 trick, Manual Boost Controller (MBC) and airbox mods. I have tried all 3 cams. K and Vx are for N/A engines IMHO. Overlap kills turbo performance. The new ipd Turbo Performance cam is nice. Don't forget to swap in a calibrated boost gauge to measure changes precisely. Twin turbos don't really apply to a 4 cyl engine. A bigger turbo is something for further down the line, as is switching in a later model intake manifold. Enjoy!

Go see www.turbobricks.com, and look under Specs (if i remember right) for a ton of detail on cam profiles, including actual tests.
The car tested was an original 240 Turbo like yours (and mine, a 1982 245T).

Results of most of the available Volvo and aftermarket cams are very enlightening, and give some insight into what Volvo was thinking when they decided on various cam profiles. It usually was NOT about maximum horsepower.

Another thing that "everyone" suggests and I've yet to try, though I know people who have, is to install the 90-up exhaust manifold. These flow much better than the older style used on the 240T's and the earlier 740T's.

Beyond that... well those Turbobricks guys have lots of tricks up their sleeves.

hi there, if you are lacking low end power, maybe someone allready changed the cam. i suggest a larger diameter exaust with a free flowing muffler in back and remove the middle muffler/resonator. read up on turning up the boost also. i plan on i.p.d. turbo cam for my 85 turbo. good luck

If you can get it inspected up there, your turbo itself is muffler enough. You will be surprised how quiet it runs without a muffler and you will notice a quicker spool-up - shorten that lag time.
