V90 Play in Power Steering Rack S90-V90

I've been told my 1997 3.0 V90 has play in the Power Steering Rack. How can I check for this play and how do I make sure it isnt the balljoints and what can be done to repair the play if I find some. If the worst come to the worst and I had to change the whole rack how many hours labour to fit and what has to be removed to fit it.

Have now jacked each front wheel off the ground and checked for play and I cannot find much play beyond a milimetre either way 3 - 9 o'clock which I would guess is the norm. The actual universal joint from the bulkhead off the sterring column has a little more play but not much more. I do get a slight knock when I steer to the right at speed but would this necessarily be steering rack play or maybe something else???

Inner and outer tie rod plus ball joint replacement is a lot cheaper than a new rack ($100 total). You would probably need to change these anyway if you get a new rack.
In my experience, wheel movement on the 3-9 oclock axis is hard to pin down to one component.
Tie rods that don't stay level when they are disconnected from the strut is one giveaway.
Torn ball joint rubber boots would be another.

Jack one front wheel off the ground, have someone hold the steering wheel tight against the colum lock and move the tire from side to side (9 & 3 o'clock positions). Keep and eye on the steering components and see where the play is (tie rods, rack, etc..).

If the rack needs to be replaced, it is not that difficult. Two hoses, Two bolts, two tie rods and the steering shaft.

You'll need the rack (I bought mine at MeridianAutoParts online). Great to work with, 3 year warranty and they supply racks to auto dealers. You'll also need the 4 crush washers for the 2 banjo fittings.
