Starter removal 200 1989

How do you remove the starter bell housing bolts. I can not find the any clearance to get one bolt from the bottom? Any hints? Thanks

I just went through this the last winter. The 19mm swivel was the only way that I could see. Broke 2. Had it towed. Mechanic says I would never have got it out w/o power tools. I don't know what state Salisbury is in (CT?) but I'm in N. Ohio w/ a lot of wet and rust.

I've always gone over the top through the engine. This makes the top bolt the easiest. The bottom is a little harder but not too bad.

I guess up there with the Blower motor replacement.

I had an oppurtunity to grab anything I want off an'89 200 that was going to the Crusher. That was on my list, It never made it though. Same issue, it wasn't coorperating. I didn't bring the right combination of tools for this jigsaw.

Here is the 19mm flex head that Art was referring to.

19 mm Flex

I had about 30" of extention on it. I also used a "snake head" wratchet.

Good luck

Upper starter bolt? Getting this one loose took me three hours! I think the series of tools I used went in this order. A 3/8 drive socket, 3/8 drive high-quality universal joint, about 1 foot of 3/8 drive extensions, a 3/8 to ½ adapter, about one foot of ½ inch drive extensions, ½ inch drive breaker bar, about 1 foot of pipe. The series of extensions ran alongside the transmission. All four wheels of the car were sitting up on 10 inches of solid fresh wood. The car was in gear, emergency brake on, and wheels chocked. While I loosened the bolt, my friend held a wrench on the nut from the front side under the hood. My intake was off at the time. I don’t know if this helps, but I hope so. I know how to cuss in both Spanish and English so this helped a bit, but it was still a job.

It has been a few years, but I clearly remember struggling under a friend's car in the tall grass, later buying a 19mm swivel socket for the next time. Haven't yet had the next time.
