Car dies suddenly while driving 700 1988

Well, my car had been running very well for the past few months and its now beginning to develope a new problem. The newest ordeal is a bit strange. The car is stalling while driving, but the tach doesn't drop to zero. In fact sometimes, like on the highway, the car will lose power as if its about to stall and the tach is still in to 1700, and then it will suddenly come back to life. Other times i'll be just driving at a lower speed and the car will stall out. Its not stalling at idle and this happens about 3 to 4 times a week. I also noticed that the car stalls most frequently right after i get a full take of gas. When i go to restart the car, half the time it will start right back up and other times it takes a while to crank it as if its flooded. Any help would be nice.

UPDATE 700 1988

I ran a funny kind of test the other day. I replaced my fuel injection relay with my dad's 240's relay (same kind). Well, my car ran great; however, his car stalled 3 times. So, problem found and solved. I've ordered one from FCPgroton along with a few other things i've needed.

Thanks again

IO would concur with the FI Relay. The solder joints on my relay were bad and I had the same symptoms.

This is very simular to a problem I had with my 89 760. It would stumble under boost - and die (at random) on the interstate. It was a worn out distributor.

Loss of power under acceleration (boost) could be indicative of "holy" turbo hoses, but I'm thinking that your's is a fuel delivery problem.

Your description of the car cranking for awhile before it catches leads me to the FI relay. You should hear the relay click and the fuel pump "whirr" to life when you turn the key to "II." If not, I bet that your relay has corroded solder joints.

I happen to have a spare FI relay and i'll put it in tonight and try it out. Hopefully it will solve everything. I've had a hose break on me and know what thats like, and its very different from that. Thanks.

I'd agree with the assesment. This sounds a lot like when the Radio Supression Relay (RSR) in my 1990 Regina 740 started to fail. It would happen w/o warning and ocassionally come back before I pulled off the highway. However, I do not think you have a regina model ('89 was the first afaik). Fuel pump relay (white one) is a likely culprit and they are known to have a limited lifetime.

"This sounds a lot like...the Radio Supression Relay (RSR)...
However, I do not think you have a regina model ('89 was the first afaik)."

RSR is a good bet here too, because the RSR is not unique to the Regina FI system.

On the (LH & Regina) '93 B230F, the RSR feeds the injectors.

On the '93 B230FT, it feeds the injector ballast resistors AND the coil.

Yup... I checked my OBD and it says i need the FI relay and mine is doing the same thing. You should check your computer, mine also went when the O2 sensor went bad. Good luck!
