Synthetic in Transmission Now 900 1992

Saturday, I flushed out the old ATF and installed Mobil 1 synthetic using the instructions found in the FAQ and at the IPD site. It was suprisingly easy... the hardest part for me was calculating how much fluid was going out and how much new fluid was going in! And this despite my quart gradiated 5 gallon bucket! What can I say... I'm mathematically challenged! I purposely put in too little (by a little over a quart)... figuring it would be easier to add some than to drain some.

Now the good news. The accolades I've read here regarding using Mobil 1 in the transmission is not hype!! At first I thought it could be in my mind... because I wanted to see an immediate improvement. But I did see an immediate improvement! The abrupt, hit you in the back, upshifts at low throttle positions are gone... and shifting is noticably smoother and quieter throughout! Yep... the Mobil 1 was expensive (about $47 for the job)... but well worth it.

How many miles did you have on the old trans fluid before you switched to Mobil 1? I flushed yesterday with DexIII and may run for a few hundred miles or so and then flush again and switch to synthetic.

I'm sorry to say I don't know how many miles were on the old fluid. I recently acquired the car from my brother, who had bought it new and kept it regularly serviced. However, he did not keep receipts of service. He would allow the servicing department do whatever they recommended at the time. So I would guess it was changed at the recommended interval... whatever that is. Judging from the appearance of the old fluid as I pumped it out, I would definitely say it was in good condition and most certainly not the original fill. It was not burned or smelly in any way. Right now, my car has a little over 150,000 miles on it. BTW... it's been four days since the change to synthetic, and it seems even smoother! Great stuff, that Mobil 1!! This weekend, I'll probably change the differential to Mobil 1 also.

As an aside... I've believed in synthetic oil for a long time. I've always used it in my vehicles' motors. However, it was almost impossible to detect the benefits. Although anytime I've had the occassion to see anything dismantled, the parts have looked very good. I've never used it in a transmission before. This was a real "wake me up" as to how much better the synthetic is in the automatic transmission! It's a night and day difference.

Can't say enough on the benifits of Synthetic fluid in the transmission.
I did mine about 1500 miles ago and the more I drive it the better the transmission shifts get. I bought the car 97 960 with 66K and the original factory fill. Flushed it about a month after I bought it with Redline D4ATF and it shifted a lot better from the start.
