is there supposed to be a drawer in the lower dash cubby? never seen one 200 1986

hey all, just a quick brain teaser for everyone... Is there supposed to be a pull out box or drawer or something in that lower center dash cubby? i know that a radio is installed here a lot of times, but on one of mine there is just the cubby with a slot down each side where it looks as if a drawer would slide in and out... whats this all about? i've never seen one and i've looked quite a bit..Thanks

The reason there are two places to mount the radio is because (in europe at least) there were two different common types of radio mount - I think these were DIN-D and DIN-E. I think the top slot is DIN-E and the other DIN-D.

Volvo produced a number of accessories which could go in the spare slot, one of which was - yes - a drawer to hold cassette tapes. The accessories don't fit in later models with 4 speaker stereos as the amplifier is mounted behind the lower slot, shortening it to less than the standard depth.

So that's why it's shallower in my '93 than in my '88, i always wondered about that... 200 1986

That makes sense, I had noticed that cassette tapes fit really well in there (not that anyone really uses them anymore, once the volvo stereo quit, I upgraded to a cd player).

But in the interests of safety the cassettes were stored without outer cases in individual drawers - it's Volvo!!

Sorry for the multi post - I've put a photo in the gallery but can't get it to display. Look in the gallery under 'technical' for cassette holder accessory.

Thats really neat! I'm sure most people have never seen one. Is the space on the right an open cubby or just a flat panel?

No, and as I recall the slots were there for the radio installation. You'll find most of your '85s still have the low mounted radio and in '86 we went to stuffing them in up top.
