HELP WITH LEAK PLEASE ( small lake in backseat on floor) 200 1990

OK Had some good rain the last couple of days, went for a ride and noticed the sound of splashing water whenever I stopped. Thought it was my water bottle on the floor, and noticed front passenger carpet was soaked, then looked in the back and was trying to decide if I should put on a life vest..............HUGE LAKE ON BACK PASSENGER floor? I took out the front and back seat, peeled up the carpet, and used the shop vac to get water out, now my problem is finding the leak, the windshield is fine( its sealed really good and the bead of windshield goop is nice and tacky) I looked in all the drain holes seem to be fine( I poured water in the cowl and it drained out the drain holes quickly) Its definitly water and not anti-freeze. SO can anyone help me try and diagnose this? Ive looked in all the places I could think of. Please Help the car is rust free and thats a rare quality in new england LOL, I would like to stop the leak so my floors dont rot out. THANKS ALOT FOR ANT HELP.

HAPPY BRICKING, ERIC

HELP WITH LEAK PLEASE ( small lake in backseat on floor) 200 1990

I have the same problem with my 88 240 wagon. After days of head scratching I finally figured out the seals on the roof rack were bad and that is where the water was coming in. Once I repaired them no more water. hth.

OK guys I found it! I took everything out of the car (carpet seats etc....) went threw the car wash and it was the windshield bottom right corner, now is this a job I should tackle? or leave it to the pros? Im very handy with my wrenches, just never had to mess with a windshield seal. THX again for the help guys.

Depends on how fussy you are about external appearances. I've used "flowable silicone" sealant with good effect. Only problem is, it's sometimes difficult to find the right spot: it may appear to be coming in at the lower right corner, but it might actually be leaking in somewhere else, running along the channel, and coming out there ... Taking out the glass is not something I'd want to attempt.

The real wihdshield seal is not what you see from the outside - that's only trim.

Real seal is between glass and body.
Body sheet metal likes to get rusty in there - glass installer usually will see rust and refuse to guarantee against leaks.

Been there 2-3 times already. Usually seals OK, but last time it didn't. I'm putting up with a small leak.

I think the cure would be to go to body shop, get them to bust out the glass and clean up the sheet metal beneath as well as possible. Then have glass guy go there to install glass. Neither will guarantee the other's work, but if you have a decent body shop they should at least be able to set it up better than it is now. Then your new glass will seal better, maybe seal completely.

This seems to be a problem I have heard of before even here in Cal. we do get heavy rain at times. Not like thunder storms but we have had heavy down pours I know how much it rains back there and rust free parts are hard to come by I'm from Troy NY, any way if you remove the right kick panel and the control unit behind there where there used to be on earlier models a vent for right hand drive cars you should find a plate covering up the hole I believe they used foam tape to close and seal the plate which turns to goo after a while and will leak remove it and use some silicone. Let me know if you find it. Chuck. also if you need rust free parts call or email me at 818-708-7052 or volvoparts85@earthlink.net

Sedan or wagon? Have a sunroof?

If sedan, Check the clear plastic drain hoses in the trunk. It is easy to unplug them by shoving a large object into the trunk. This water usually stays in the trunk. but parhaps could drain under the back seat, depending on which way the hose is dangling.

If sunroof, make sure that the drains from the sunroof are clear and drain to the ground. I don't know where they are routed, but I know they have a way of getting blocked up.

Check drains in bottoms of doors. If the door bottom fills up, perhaps it might drain under inner panel into interior of car.

If you get really good at finding leaks, come look at the front passenger side of my '90 sedan. I suspect the windshield trim, but I don't know how to be sure.
