Bad tranny: rebuild, replace or junk it? 900 1991

I'm satisfied now that the problem is inside the tranny and not just the kickdown cable or a flush. It's getting worse, not engaging into 3rd until warmed up for at least 4 km now. (It's at 267,000 km)
I have been quoted $1000 to $1200 (Can.) to buy and install a used tranny, with a 60 day warranty only. To rebuild the one I have, $2400 Can., for a 1 yr or 20,000km warranty. The dealer price for same is in the stratosphere.

I have to decide whether to
(1) dump the car as is (virtually no resale value) and rent a car at $800 per month while I shop for a new one.(leaning to Subaru Outback at the moment...)
(2) get the cheap used tranny because it is almost the same price as a car rental anyway, rely on the 60 day warranty while I shop for a replacement car, and I could at least resell the Volvo as functioning.
(3) get the rebuilt, better warranty work done and take more time shopping around, possibly get a better resale price.

Comments and opinions?

Bad tranny: rebuild, replace or junk it? 900 1991

    Dear mon,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Used AW70/AW71 trannies are not costly. With minimal care, they outlast the cars. Thus, at a salvage yard, you should be able to find an used tranny, for the equivalent of US$200-300. Pull the dipstick. If the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is rose coloured and clear, the tranny likely is fine. If the ATF is dark and/or cloudy, move on to the next car.

The swap is not terribly complex (2 hours, at most). The used tranny should be flushed twice, with Wal-Mart brand ATF and - after perhaps 1000 Km - with Mobil 1 Synthetic.

If the bodywork on your car - and its interior - are in sound condition, a tranny swap will be fine. The 60-day guarantee is enough, to ensure that the replacement works. Do not get a tranny re-built: that is simply a waste of money. A low-miles, used unit will be just as good.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

I agree with spook, except for the wal*mart fluid. avoid spending any money at wal*mart, or you will just encourange them to shut down any other canadaian wal*marts that dare to unionize. You can buy cheap fluid anywhere.

        Dear repairmanjack,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. You're correct: any basic ATF will do.

I used "Wal-Mart" in the general sense, i.e., average quality ATF, which will put into solution, any dirt, etc., so that when the Synthetic is put in, it will find relatively clean working surfaces.

        Yours faithfully,

        spook

The consensus seems to be getting a used one.

Most of these transmissions last a long time and the probability that a used one will last another long time is very good.

Also since they last a long time there isn't much demand for them and the laws of supply & demand make them relatively cheap. This should give you some bargaining power.

You will not be able to sell the car for any more by using option "3" over option "2" unless the warranty is transferable to the new owner. It probably isn't.
