740GL Overdrive Problem, Manual Trans 700

The Overdrive refuses to kick in until the ambient temperature is about 65 degrees. I have replaced the relay. Until the temperature is high enough, the OD indicator will not light up. Once the outside temperature is high enough, the OD activates reliably. There's obviously no fault in the OD switch, the 4th gear switch, or the relay. Anyone have any ideas what's wrong here?

Charles wants to bet on the 4th gear switch. I've been thinking the switch was OK but I tried the left pull in 4th with the OD engaged and it popped right out of OD so there may be more than ceremonial value in replacing the switch before venturing onward to the eye-popping expense of replacing the solenoid.

My 4th gear switch did the same thing. After a few changes of synthetic fluid it has not returned. I assumed the viscous lube was restricting the plungers movement?
