ABS problems Please Help ABS tech 700

Hi all

My 89 740Ti has a ABS problem

The dash light flashes on and off and the surge protector relay click on and off very rapidly. When there is body and supension movement

I have cleaned the front sensors

I thought that one of the sensor wire is breaking down but I have disconnected each one of the front sensor wires at the connection neat the strut towers and it still has the same problems

If the rear sensor wire is breaking down does it affect the speedo while it is braking down.

Or is the speedo only affected when the wire fails complete

I understand that Diagnostic Code can be retrieve from the ABS computer. Where is the Diagnostic Link Connector box in a 89 740Ti.

Is there a special tool required to retrieve the codes

Where do I get one of these tools

George

Unless your turbo has a diagnostic box on the left front suspension tower, you will not be able to retrieve codes from the ABS computer. Earlier LH2.2 systems do not come with diagnostics.

The "suspension movement" strongly suggests that you have a wiring or relay/fuse/transient surge protector fault. See the 700/900 FAQ for details on the location of the relay and fuse. If this is not the cause, then try tracing wires to the control unit and disconnecting various wires to try to locate the issue. Start with the power supply. Then trace through the main connector to the underhood ABS unit, which may be loose or corroded.

Check the power cable from battery to starter.
As 700 volvo's get older, there is a tendency for the insulation to wear through. when you turn a corner, the abs and or other lights may come on as the cable shorts against the frame. if it is this it is very dangerous. I was lucky, just cost me a starter rebuild and a replacement cable.

      good luck
