automatic transmission question 140-160 1974

hello all. I have a 1974 144 fuel injection and auto transmission. My question is this. When I start the car it blows the transmission dipstick about 4 inches out of the tube. Doesn't do it all the time, but more often than not. Secondly once in a while, from a dead stop car will not shift out of first, while spraying transmission fluid out of filler tube. I check the fluid regularly and have not overfilled, the fluid itself is not burned and in good color. The chilton manual says I might have a clogged breather vent (I have no idea where to look for that) any other ideas would be helpful. I do most of my own mechanical work and slowly restoring the car.

If I remember the only vent on a BW 35 transmission was incorporated onto the outside of the dipstick tube via a rubber hose from a nipple on the top of the transmission sump to location high on the dpstick tube.

I've seen similar symptoms on more than one 164... blows tranny fluid out the filler. Sometimes even after shutting the motor off.

Sorry... no idea why. Just kept an eye on the level.

Throw the Chilton manual in the trash.
Get a green Volvo manual. Check skipskip's auctions on ebay.

automatic transmission question 140-160 1974

My Green manual also doesn't have a mention of a "breather" valve. But I did find a round, flat piece of green foam material about the size of a penny on my garage floor, under the tranny. About the same time that reverse started to fully engage at idle, killing the engine.
I am going to flush the tranny by dumping the pan and seeing what "bits" are laying around and putting in a new filter.

I've got the green Volvo manual also came with the car, but it doesn't explain why tranny fluid blows out of the filler tube. The chilton gives a couple of ideas, but not much else. Any other ideas?

Rich
