ATTN: southern california people, help reccomend radio installer! 200 1989

I've been strongly thinking about getting a new radio installed, nothing fancy, just a basic fm/am cd player to replace my non-working original radio. I've been using a portable discman and speakers :P a DIY radio installation is too daunting for me, and, yes, I've checked the back of the radio when I wanted to see why the radio wasn't working. whoa, too complicated! anyway, I will trust a pro to do this job for me. I'm very hesitant about having a place like best buys or circuit city do it, but they have some good weekly deals and if I have to, I prefer someone who has installed a radio in a 240. so that's where I need help. anyone know a place in the san gabriel valley that has experience installing a radio in a 240. I know it's probably not a big deal, but I really want someone who knows the ins and outs of installing a radio in a 240 and who has done it rather than someone who hasn't. I'll even remove the glovebox in advance if that is suggested for an easier job. thanks.

I bought an AWIA cd player with a mp3 hookup on the front for my 1991 240 at Best Buy in Burbank. They had free installation and they did a good job. Now I can drive around with my IPOD without going thru the radio signals.

Do it yourself. I just put 2 in my cars it was not difficult just take your time. There are 8 wires for 4 speakers, 2 for power (1 switched and 1 not) and a ground. I reused the existing harness from the old radio and soldered the wires to the new radio harness and plugged it in. I do have some experience soldering and using a multimeter. You will need a $5 - $10 multimeter to ID the correct wires. Dan

Installing the radio is fairly simple, but if you still have the factory radio, you'll have to bypass the amp. On your 89, it should be to the right of the passengers feet, back behind the glovebox somewhere. As I recall, the front speakers are wired through the amp, and you have to do a little bit of rewiring to wire them to your new radio. I managed to do mine myself, but I can understand if you'd rather not do it.

I've also had an audio place install a radio for me (they offered free installation), and though I had to wait forever, there weren't really any problems. They did mangle my old radio, and though I hadnt planned on re-using it, I was still a little annoyed. If you do intend to use your old radio, I'd mention that, and maybe mention the issue of bypassing the amp. Volvos are pretty simple, so anyone who installs radios shouldnt have a problem.

Rather than bypassing the AMP remove it along with the radio and the wire harness between the two. Then take the matching connectors from the removed harness to hook up the new radio. The large male black connector connects to the front speakers, 2 - powers and ground. The small white male connector is for the rear speakers. Solder or crimp connect these two connectors to the one supplied with the radio and you have a nice neet plug and play installation. Your newly built harness plugs into the cars wiring and the radio.
You will need a Stereo Install kit that can be bought at Best Buy for $18, this includes the face plates for both upper and lower radio compartment installation. Dan
