Advise on removing/replacing front pipe with used one vs. new one 700

Dang. I had my exhaust from the catalytic converter to the tailpipe replaced two months ago with new pieces from swedishimports. Coming back from Nebraska to Kansas yesterday it started sounding like a truck. I suspect there's a hole in the front pipe now, which wasn't replaced earlier (I could kick myself now), and I can sure hear the sound of escaping exhaust with a noticable loss of power. Turbo is also making a whining sound just as it starts to spool. Available money for car repairs is a big factor these days with me. There's a boneyard not too far from where I am now, and I saw a 760 turbo there with a new tailpipe, muffler, and catalytic converter up on a hoist. If the front pipe is good, is it reasonable to take it and replace the one in my car, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one $110 plus shipping vs. $35.00 (says junkyard)?

Also, is there a cross-reference new pipe that one could use to replace said pipe? Called VOLVO dealer locally and the price he quoted for the pipe and gaskets made me cringe....

If the junk yard one looks good, go for it. $35 sounds pretty steep, are you sure he didn't include the cat withit? You will have to get new gaskets.

Catylitic Converters can not be sold as used parts from Salvage yards. 700

Legally the salvage yard can't include the cat with it, it's against the law. The salvage yard can quickly loose their buisness license and receive some VERY hefty fines if they're selling or distributing used catylitic converters (other than to the Cat recyclers who melt them down and re-use the metals). None of my local yards will sell a cat, -unless you're buying the whole car as a titled asset.

The going rate for salvage yard exhaust parts around here is $4 per pipe, $10 for a muffler, $9 for an exhaust manifold, and $50 for a Turbocharger.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

I'd have no hesitation with a used one, the stock 700 turbo front pipes are pretty beefy so as long as it's had an easier life than your current one it should be good for a while. I'm in the same boat, plenty of things I'd like to do but my 780 has bled me dry & it's a struggle to come up with rent - let alone dealer prices for new parts - so used it is! I draw the line at anything behind the converter though unless I know it's nearly new - just too much hassle trying to get stuff apart then back together & tight.

I bought a new can of PBlaster and have a breaker bar. Is there anything else I need to take to ensure I can get this thing off in one visit to the junkyard? Experiences are greatly appreciated.

I just yanked a front exhaust pipe for my '87 745 today. It was quite the pain. My exhaust pipe cover rattles around and makes nasty sounds. Harmless but annoying so I'm replacing it.

I used BreakFree to help loosen the thre pipe-manifold connecting bolts. The problem is that is is at such an awkward angle and there is no room. Fortunately I had some long extensions with toggle ends. I ended up having to take off the exhaust manifold as one of the bolts was just too hard to get to. Also there is a clamp bolt that holds the exhaust pipe "handles" (?) the curved rods the are above the pipe.

All in all it took me about an 1-1/2 hours to get it (I had to go out to my car to get additional tools).
