My car seems to have recently developped a "clacking" noise. I'm pretty sure its not the valves, becasue i hear no noise when the engine is idling. As soon as the engine is loaded however, i hear a fairly sharp clackin sound which doesnt go away as the engine gets warmer.

What could it be? At forst I would have thought piston slap, but I would think that the noise would go away after it is warm.

Also, anybody noticed a noise comming from their transmission (auto) when their car is really loaded down - its like something is wobbling around (to be technical about it) inside the tranny, but only with two or more people in the car, or a heavy load.

ITs an 87 760 by the way, with 241,000kms on it. If it has some big engine problem, I'll probably sell it and find some other volvo... as much as that would GREATLY disapoint me.

exhaust manifold gaskets mabye? Had mine replaced and the car purrs. Before it sounded like a diesel engine.

Was this inconsistent as far as the sound being the worst?

My 89 760 will sometimes be OK. At other times - usually after it has been run a while - and is good and warm - it almost sounds like a mix of valves, injector noise, and someting in the bottom end.

I'd definitely check those - they can sound very much like a bad rod bearing or worse. When the motor is cold, start it & feel around the manifold gaskets for exhaust blowing by.

this all sounds expensive... labor intensive and worrysome... the combination of which i don't like.
