240 Donut spare 200

Hello, I am picking up a 1984 240 DL and want to replace the donut tire with a tire to match the 195R70-14 or thereabouts tires on the ground. have not had good luck with the donut tire. Thanks in advance, Steve

I replaced the temporary spare on my son's 81 with a std steel rim holding a 185/70-14 tire. You might get a 195 to fit - not sure a larger tire would go in there.

Been driving 240 wagons 10 years +.

I've used lots of 205-70-14, 195-75-14, 195-70-14.

I've had all of these in the spare tire well of the 245's.
Don't know about the sedan for certain, but we had one, and I would expect I threw one or more of those in that car's spare tire well also.

The 205-70's and 195-75's are a bit tight, but they do go into the well.

Steve -

Are you near Houston, TX ? I have a surplus (read: clutter to get rid of) of steel 240 wheels, some with dubious tires on them. Yours for the getting.

Also have, same deal, two 15-inch 740 steel wheels with decent tires thereon.

Regards,

Bob, near the metropolis of Cypress, TX

Too bad, too far.

I eventually want to get 4 steels for Snows.

I have all season tires on my car and have since 1989 but every winter I say, "Gee, I should just get aggressive snows on rims" Although I have never gotten stuck. I still would loveto stumble on steel wheels locally.

I am in Louisiana; however, I will not be in the area for a while and I leaving June 1, 05 to pick the car up. My thoughts are to replace the donut tire and place a real tire on the present rim, since it will be a spare only. That way, in case something happens on the way home, at least I would have one decent tire. thanks Steve

My understanding is you definitely should not put a regular tire on the donut rim.

Rim width of the donut rim is much smaller than standard rim and is not appropriate for the regular tire. I think you'll have to go with the donut until you get your hands on a regular rim for your full-size spare. Carry 2 donuts if you can't find a real rim. Donuts are plentiful at the junkyards, and steelies should be available if you have any yards near you at all.

For what it's worth, the Volvo donut seems beefier than most. I still prefer a real tire on a real rim, and that's what we use on our 240s, but that donut doesn't look tooooo bad.

Yes, only due to limited time, I will be out of town, in the other direction of Houston, before I can get to the vehicle. Thanks for your input and effort. Steve
