Noisy lifters on Start-up S90-V90

By using 5W30 Synthetic lifters go quiet the quickest, the problem is when the car sits for a week or more without use, then the noise is BAD for a longer period of time. It's so bad that he engine runs very rough and then stops, after cranking for a bit it restarts and runs quiet. With 158,000 miles should I replace lifters, or lifter and cams, or valve job/filters/cams or let it be.
Thanks

I would switch to M1 5w-40 first. If that doesn't work, drop the pan and change all the "O" rings on the oil pickup tube back to the pump.

Switch to Mobil 1 5w40. I had the same problem with 10w30 both regular and synthetic. With 5w40 it hasn't done it once even when I leave the car for more than a week.

Does it take a while for your "oil light" to go out when this happens? If so, you may have a problem with the pump loosing prime due to an air leak or a worn pump. There have been cases reported where the "O" ring on the pick-up tube fails and lets air get sucked in.

        Just another idea......

Then you definitely have the problem I had. Mine would get progressively worst the loger I didn't use the car. Once after not driving the car for a month with 10w30 in the crank case, it took a couple of minutes before the vibrations, RPM oscilations and lack of power went away. I'm not sure what it is about the valve lifters and 10w30 that causes this. But volvo seems to have addressed the problem by editing the oil specs in the owner's manual after selling the cars. They added 5w40 as an option. Also make sure you are using MANN oil fiters.

        Good luck

I think 5w40 only comes in synthetic. I like Mobil 1 5w40 due to its diesel rating and its a true synth. Castrol Penzoil and Valvoline synthetics are only highly refired non synthetics with synthetic like properties. Mobil 1 and a few other smaller brands are the only true synthetics.

While some may call it snake oil,I have found that Auto r-x will cure a lot of ills in cleaning up the oiling system on these cars. Check out their website and when you have gone thru the two clcles they recomend, switch over to 5w 40 mobile one.
I would not try to change out the lifters and all, with out at least trying this first.
When you changed over to syn oil, did you change the filter after the first 500 miles, the engine will let a lot of stuff loose into the system when you start using syn oil. You may have an oil filter thats gotten a lot of trash in it, if you have not done this.
    Hope that helps

Thought about this a little while and I'm thinking that you may also have a build up of oil on your valves, find someone in your area that does a motor vac:(again check out the website)this machine will clean the engine fuel system out from the injectors to the cat, and clean the crud that builds up on the intake valves as well.

While it's probably a good time to get your fuel system cleaned (like Poolman sain), I would also start looking into a slightly thicker oil. Your engine is more than broken in by now, so it will need a little extra thickness to create the pressure that it needs.

I've got a Nissan pickup with about 150k miles. I switched to the thicker stuff and not it purrs even after sitting for a few days.

I've try that, that is thicker oils but the lifter nock for longer after start up, that is second longer.
          Thanks
