Easiest way to differentiate the B23 and B230: the valve cover. The B23 has a silver/metallic Valve cover with "VOLVO" in raised lettering. The B230 has a black valve cover with "VOLVO" in silver lettering.

The B21 looks like the B23, except that it is a slightly smaller motor (2.1L as opposed to 2.3L) and has a different intake manifold.

If it is still there, the engine model number should be printed on a sticker on the top timing belt cover. Also, the number is embossed on the passenger side of the block, below the oil filter.

    If you have a 1986 240 you have a B230F. If a 740 you have a B230F, or a B230FT, or a D24T.

B21 vs B23 -- different intake manifold, same crankshaft pulley.

    B23 vs B230 -- different crankshaft pulley, a/c compressor, p/s pump.
