Lacquer Thinner In ATF Trick ?? (Att : Don Forster) 200

In a reply to a post earlier today it was suggested that 6 to 8 ounzes of lacquer thinner added into your atf fluid then fluid replaced/flushed out after about 500 miles might fix a non working overdrive. Has anyone tryed this trick ? Any feedback, comments about this ?

Non-working overdrive? Are you sure 'fluid' is the problem? 200

re: "...might fix a non working overdrive...."

Assuming an automatic (AW70/71), because you mention ATF, then this idea (lacquer thinner) is to fix a non-working overdrive? What reason(s) prompt you to suspect that the transmission needs a "clean out"? What are you sysmptoms*? Most non-working overdrives are caused by the controls being nonfunctional, not because the internal fluid passages need cleaning. In fact, I've never heard of anyone else trying to fix a non-working overdrive on a AW-70/71 by your suggestion.

[ * By "symptoms", I'm referring to things like the dash light not going out, not hearing the click of the relay, etc. Possible causes include bad wire insulation, bad relay, bad switch, or bad solenoid.]

I'm only challenging you because you may be trying to solve this the wrong way. No offense meant -- I'm only trying to be helpful. :-).

Best regards

Lacquer Thinner In ATF Trick ?? (Att : Don Forster) 200

It's a old remedy for a auto that's been run with dirty or burn't (as in run hot) lubricant. It works. I've done it to several different cars in the past. It dissolves any varnish that may have formed in the tranny and frees any sticking parts. You really need to flush the transmission after this treatment to get rid of all of the "goop" that you're going to dissolve. It won't repair any worn out parts in the tranny, but if the problem is sluggish response or shifting, it helps. It works for me, your experience may vary.
