well, i'm back again.

does anyone know for sure that if i do a bellhousing swap, that i'll be able to change the 4hp22 that's in my '86 740 turbo diesel with an aw71 from an '89 760 reg turbo?

No, not that I know of. I've had bell housings off of both of those trannies and without some real creative machine work you are not making the swap either way on thoses. Did you 4hp take a dump on you, not that that is unusual but it sure is in a diesel. I have yet to have a diesel with a dead ZF in it. What about a later model 240 diesel, they run AW transmissions. Take a look at stuffing one of those in your 740 or maybe pulling a bell housing off of a 240 diesel and see if that will work on your later AW71. I know my kids has got an AW55 in it but it is an '82 240 diesel, see if they came in the later ones or if the bell housing from a 55 will work on a 71 because that ZF bell housing is completely different from an AW.
