My 94 944 just shuts of while driving! i put in neutral and turn the key and she goes! 900 1994

This morning while doing some local errands I was driving at about 50 mph when the car just shut off!. Being in traffic i kept rolling and placed the car in neutral and turned the key. The car started right up and i kept going and then 20 seconds later it did it again. I placed the car in neutral and turned the key and it kept going. What can this problem be and how can i diagnose it and fix it. I drive 100 miles round trip 5x's a week and i need the car to continue being reliable.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or solutions,
Fred

Top edge of the bellhousing on the passenger side of the engine. Wire runs up and across the back of the head to the driver side to a 2-wire connector. Takes all of 5 minutes to replace with a hex key socket (10mm?) and extension. Be careful during removal/replacement that you do not damage the threads of the holddown screw, it would be a bear to repair.

        Take a look at this:

        http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineSensors.htm#Crank_Postition_Sensor

Also, it could be the fuel injection relay. Last fall my car would just die while I was driving, it was happening at greater and greater frequency. After a few minutes it would start up again and run fine, until it died. I replaced the fuel injection relay (~ $40 from an inport parts store) and that was the problem.

By the way, is your check engine light going on? Any codes?

it happened again. the tachometer dropped all the way as the engine continued to stumble and i had to turn off the car and then it started again. it then died as i drove and i placed the car in neutral and turned the key it started up and kept going. really weird!

I agree with lucid-- check the crank sensor.

Mine had a very similar problem-- the insulation had come off the crank sensor cable and every once in a while it would contact the coil wire and the thing would go crazy-- just like you said. New crank sensor fixed it right up.

It's easy to do, 10mm socket (I think) get a really long extension bar and a stubby ratchet handle. Be gentle, you can bend the bracket easy.

Check the FAQ for Crank Position Sensor... 900 1994

...aka RPM sensor/sender. The heart of ignition. If original, yours is overdue. Replacement part is about $30.
