fuel line problem?? 700

ok....I got an 87' 760T about two weeks ago and it has been running fine. Two days ago on my way home the car died. It wouldn't restart for about 30 seconds and then it fired right up. I kept going and got about another mile before it died again. I waited another 30 seconds and it started up. I got two miles this time and it died. Another 30 seconds and it started right up.

All this time I had been rolling through an area that was a 45mph zone and that's about what I was doing, perhaps a little less. After the third time I started it I was on a 65mph zone and was doing about 70. The car ran fine at this speed the rest of the way home.

The next day the same thing happened too and from work. When I was going between 0 and 45 the car would die occasionally. When I got over 60 or so the car would run just fine. Also it did this on a quarter tank and aging on a full tank of gas.

Does this sound like a FPR problem or something else on the line? The previous owner thinks he replaced the pumps sometime in the last few years.

Thanks!
Ben

Just some extra information: when the car dies you can just feel the power loss. The tach is still reading off between 1-2k (whatever I was doing) while the car coasts. If you push on the gas the tach will drop down 1-200rpm very quick and you can feel the car slow a lot faster. Inevitably the car will just die. I assume this could also be one of the pumps so I’m wondering which one would be more likely to be the problem (since I’m short on cash)?

If you are handy with a soldering iron you might want to try resoldering the fuel injection relay mounted behind the ashtray, and the radio suppression relay usually mounted on the passenger side strut tower(along with an identically looking fan relay. Check the 700/900 frequently asked questions link under "Features" at the top of the page. Look for your stalling symptoms and follow the advice given to correct your problem. Most of the time these relays can be resoldered and put back into service. Good luck! John

well, after replacing the pumps, FPR, AMM and the fuel filter and I found that it was the relay. I'm going to the junk yard in a few to get another one.
I'm wondering though, what do you re-solder on it? I have taken it apart and all the connections look fine.

Thanks

Look at the solder joints where the relay itself mounts to the printed circuit board. The solder often cracks around the mounting pins and if you reflow the solder around these pins then the relay should work again. I have only had one relay out of dozens that didn't respond to this repair. Glad you found the problem. John
