Did you test for Ignition codes (socket 6) as well as Fuel (socket 2)?

There are three things to look at:

1. Speed Sensor

2. Fuel Pump Relay

3> Corroded Battery Terminals

You've already replaced the speed sensor. Is it getting fuel? I don't know how much your time is worth, but I prefer to buy new components when possible as opposed to re-soldering connections.

Hope it helps,

In addition to the good advice you've already gotten....

Another suspect is the Radio Suppression Relay which should be found mounted on the front side of radiator overflow bottle. If you're lucky, your 940 has two relays mounted there like the 740's. If so, try swapping the wire leads between the two. One is the Radio Suppression Relay and it provides electrical power to the injectors. It's failure is very common. The other identical relay is the electric fan relay. If swapping the relays makes your car run right, that's great - it means you found the culprit. But it also means the fan won't work right, so be careful not to overheat the engine during this test. If your car has one relay there and the other (fan) relay over behind the L/H headlight, you can't do this simple swap.

Search the archives for info on resoldering relays. It's typically not the relay contacts that burn and fail, but rather the solder joints on the little circuit boards that sort of crystallize and break down. Examining them with a good strong magnefying glass will usually show the bad connections. This works for both the RSR relay and the fuel pump relay.

Good luck.

Not sure if the 940 has RSRs 900 1994

I had this problem with my 1990 740 and it's turned out to be a bad RSR.
I tore hair out in frustration before someone finally figured it out.

I have a 1995 940 now, it's bosch an it doesn't seem to have any RSRs, though it is a single pump system. I suspect that Fred doesn;t have them either. Or if we do have them, they are not located where they were kept in the 740.

Don't know all the symptoms, but if having occasional stall, especially when hot, if it starts back up after cooling down, take a look at the power stage, you'll basically need to try a known good on in there

Fred,

I had the same symptoms you're talking about with a faulty fuel injection relay. Everything else checked out. I thought, mistakenly, that a fuel injection relay either works or it doesn't, but a faulty one will cause the symptoms you're seeing.

I haven't kept up with your earlier posts, so this maybe isn't relevant. Have you considered the fuel pump relay?

If your driving and it shuts down, it's usally your crank sensor or Fuel pump relay.

Hiya,

I had the same problem and it was the fuel pump relay. The joints were "dry joints" which is when the solder has a hairline crack in it so the pump works on and off.

I took it out, opened the casing and resoldered the joints on the board, and all was well, no more pump shutdown whilst driving.

Thats what worked for me. Now i have a bigger problem, but thats something completely different.

Dave
