Poor Rover got a Jeep up her bumper! 200

Poor Rover! She's my 1983 245DL who before now didn't have a single dent or ding on her. The body's nice and straight, all the doors line up, sure there's some rust but nothing a $20 can of implement paint wouldn't make pretty again. Friday I drove her from PA to FL, saturday I turned around and came home. Got a wave and a tumbs up from someone in Jacksonville (blue 245, hello if you're out there!). Here I am, 23 years old driving a refrigerator-white station wagon to the corporate office and I love it! I still park in small spaces beside 2-door coupes and drive over curbs for fun, but all in all, I"m proud of the old girl.

This morning I was stopped for a turning car in front of me, heard the squeal and BAM! There was a Jeep Wrangler bouncing off my back bumper. Luckily for me the folks want to go outside of insurance to pay for the repairs, so here I am heading off for an estimate. I know I’m going to need a new rear bumper, trim piece, tail gate latch and a tail light lens assembly. We’ll have to chain the back to a tree and drive away to straighten out the back. :( Other than the lights, which I can get through IPD, am I going to be searching bone yards, or is there a place online where I can get the latch and trim?

    First of all, my commiserations.

My 83 was rear ended twice. Definitely get a good body shop to look at it. I had a place that did concourse restorations fix mine.

PnP's can be good for parts but 83 - 85 can be a bit specific, i.e. bumper trim, bumper shocks, etc. so it's wherever you can get the part basically; e-bay if necessary. I guess it depends how fast you want to get it done.

It's a true downer having your unblemished Old Faithful take an undeserved shot, but you are handling it in the right spirit.

You're on the right track taking it to a body shop for an evaluation...see if you can get a trusted 'car person' to recommend one, or ask the Volvo dealer who they use.

When I got tapped in the rear of our 83 it didn't look like much but it was a $1600 repair! This was in 1998. The unibody had been tweaked slightly and needed straightening (lifted the carpet in the trunk, and there was the cracked/crazed paint on the 'frame'), the bumper shocks had been compressed beyond their limit so had to be replaced, a broken taillight, a slight dent, a new bumper cover, and some repainting. His insurance paid.

I'm not suggesting you will want to hit the at-faults up for that kind of money, but once you get a professional opinion of the exact damage and costs for full repair, you can decide what your options are.

And the guilty party might be much happier to 100% fund your DIY proposal when they see the pro's estimate.

      ESTIMATE - OMG!!!!! 200

Just got back from the estimate - $2200!!!!!!!!! For a bumper tap! Half way though getting the parts listed, a red light came up saying TOTAL, as in, if we go through insuarnce, they'll total poor Rover! Next stop is the bone yard and classified ads to see if we can pick up a whole 'nother car for much less. There was an 89 845 in the paper a while back for less than that. Now we've got the debate going on - hassle with finding parts & fixing the car ourselves, or go through insurance and get something new - that is, if I have collision on the car which I don't think I put on in the first place. Hell, we only paid $500 for her last year.

      Sarah and poor, poor Rover
