A/C wire going to clutch 200 1988

On top of the A/C compressor there is a little green and black plastic box with the wire going into the back fo the clutch. The wire on mine has broken off flush with the box and I can't reattach it, my question is what is the box and do you need it? An old compressor I have does not have it. Thanks for any help.

It is my understanding that it is a suppressor that is there to dampen the spikes and electrical noise that is caused everytime the compressor field opens and closes. The clutch is similar to a great big relay, when you put current to it an electro magnetic is created and that is what sucks the two plates together. Now there is clutch material in there to hold it together but none the less a pretty healthy little electro magnetic field is created everytime and when it opens and closes it makes a good sized spike which can be induced into the wire around it. This kind of noise is usually only apparent in things like radios and stuff. That is why they call the radio interference relay what they do, it's job is to cut down on the radio interference that was being caused by the injectors.

Thank you for the quick responce. I'll remove it for now and hope the noise isn't to much. Noise vs. no A/C not a tough choice when its hot. Thanks again.

Eric.

It'll probably be fine, I have seen plenty of el-cheapo rebuilds that ran without them.
