240 a/c question 200

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know what the metal wire/line that comes off of the a/c expansion valve on a 240 goes to? It's about a foot long. Mine is just hanging loose behind the dash. My car is an '86 240.

Cheers,
Dave

    240 a/c question 200

    Hi Dave,

The metal capillary tube that you speak of is supposed to be attached to the evaporator outlet pipe. It is a very thin and flexible tube, but be careful when bending it (very thin copper and, if broken, you would need to replace the entire expansion valve, which is not cheap). If the capillary bulb is not clamped to the evaporator outlet, the A/C will not work properly at all. Most likely, it will freeze up after running for a while. The bulb on the end of the tube should be in firm contact with the pipe, such as with a hose clamp (do not draw it too tight). Volvo originally had the evaporator pipe and expansion valve thoroughly wrapped with that sticky butyl-type rubber tape to insulate. Anyway, I would secure that bulb firmly to the evaporator (be sure it is the outlet side of the evaporator) and then wrap the entire pipe and valve assembly with the tape.

    I hope this helps...

      Hi Joe,

I'll get a clamp and secure the bulb to the evaporator pipe. How do I know which is the outlet side and where did you buy the rubber tape?

      Thanks for your help.

      Dave

        Hi Dave,

The inlet pipe is the one that has the expansion valve threaded in, so you want to secure it to the one that the valve is not in. I usually get the tape here at the dealership, but I'd imagine you'd be able to aquire some at a parts store. If not, let me know and I can get you the Volvo part number (the stuff isn't too awful expensive). It probably isn't 100% necessary, but it wouldn't hurt to wrap it good while you're in there. Let me know if you need anything else...
