Steering Columns: Differences between the years? 200 1980

As I prepare to head out to the pick and pull to find a steering column to replace the one that is practically dead in my '80 245, I looked over the procedure in my Bentley manual.

Unfortunately for me Bentley doesn't go back to models made prior to 1983.

Bentley says that the '83-'84 steering columns were different then the ones they started using in '85.

Is it safe for me to assume that all 240s made prior to '83 had the same steering rack as the '83-'84 models?

Can a later steering column be retrofitted to my early car? (Would it even be worth it? As far as I know the only difference is different anti-theft devices.)

Thanks as always.

the 75-79 cars have a smaller steering shaft than the 80 and laters. as far as the 83-84s being different than the 85s, i don't know. i would imagine-notice i did not say assume-imagine, that a complete column from any 80 to whenever air bags started would be ok. curious, i've never seen a column need replacing. good luck, chuck.

I'm not sure what caused the steering column to fail as it has.

My best guess is that 445K miles will do it to a steering column.

- curious, i've never seen a column need replacing.

Seem it - it definitely needs replacing. Metal fatigue at one of the crush points is the issue, causing loose and clunking steering.

Dylan - I still stand by JB Weld + duct tape for temporary reinforcement!

I've got some epoxy and duct tape on it now. While it is better, it's still not as tight as it use to be, and as tight as I'd like it.

I've got some free time during this weekend, which is when I plan to take care of it.
