B230F Distributors 200

Does anyone know if the distributor in the B230F engine was ever non-electronic or will the earlier distributors from the B23 engines swap? I've got a project that I want run with a mechanical system.

Thanks,

All automotive B21, B23, and B230 engines have electronic distributors. The 1975 240 with B20 used an electronic distributor which is quite valuable for use in the pre-75 cars for conversion to electronic ignition.

I believe the B21A (carbureted) engines of the late70's/early 80's had points-type ditributors. These were widely marketed in Canada up to about 1984.

      Hi John,

The only reason that I'm looking for a mechanical distributor is for a project engine with no computer controls and no rpm restrictions. It probably won't be possible unless I can find an aftermarket replacement.

      Thanks,

This car belongs to Peter Linnsen, who owns the V Shop in Porland, Oregon.

It has individual coil packs. You can see them on the firewall. Peter had the car on a dynamometer about 2 weeks ago, and it had 401 horsepower with 351 ft-lbs for torque. Those figures are at the rear wheels. The car has a current Oregon license.

Yes, the car uses fuel injection and computer controled igniton. There is no distributor.

That is absolutely beautiful! I wonder what block he is using? Do you know what ignition system he is running? I noticed some interesting hardware around the top of the strut towers.

          Thanks for the photo.

Peter is using an L block B230FT. L blocks have piston oil cooling. He is using a forged Penta stroker crank with 8.2:1 pistons. The head is from Stem Parner in Sweden. The transmission an M51 from Europe. The M51 is a Getrag 265 made for Volvo. The car is very hot.

              Hi John,

I love building exotics, but after looking at the cost of forged pistons(Ross), crank and a good set of rods, not to mention the head work that it would take to get 400+ HP from a 4 cylinder engine and keep it together, I can get 600+ from a N/A pretty stock big block Chevy, 800+ with a little massage and still have the money left for a decent tranny and rear end.

We grew up on 350+ hp in 2700 to 3200 pound cars from the factory (a '64 two door post Nova will strip to 2400 with a 336 inch 365hp engine)so 400 hp in a 3300 pound viking sled is not going to impress an old guy like me very much, except with the technology that it takes to make it run.

I do like these cars for the design of the suspension and the style, am impressed with the durability of the little tractor motor, but I am now thinking more along the lines of the 4.3 liter Chevy V-6 as a project engine rather than a Volvo 4 cylinder more because of the peculiarities of the Bosch electronics than anything else.

              Kindest Regards,

    Harry:

The LH 2.4 system in the '89 and later cars did away with the Hall sensor in the distributor in favor of a flywheel sensor in the bell housing. Hence the '89-'93 240 distributors have no electronic connections to them other than the plug and coil wires going to the distributor cap.
