89dl starts hard, runs rough 200 1989

Just got the car. Starts, but kicks very hard and stalls starter for a moment, then fires up and runs rough. Timing check shows very advanced timing compared to my other 89 dl which runs fine. From what I read, the normal ecu problem with these is that it works or doesn't. I'll check number of ecu tomorrow. Since I have a second car, what parts should I exchange to narrow problem? Try ecu swap first?

Here's the latest result. I checked the ECU and sure enough, it had the pink label 561 unit. The other 89 had a white label 951 unit, so I swapped them out. The trouble did not go away or switch cars. So, I've eliminated the ECU. I checked the wiring condition of the crank sensor and the black outer coating doesn't look so good, but wiggling it and rerouting it seemed to make so difference to hard starting, stumbling idling, etc. I think someone may have set the idle high just to keep it running, which may explain why the timing light shows it to be advanced as compared to the other car that has a slower, smooth idle and timed at around tdc.

    Any ideas out there? Thanks!

What's the year of the second car?

I think the bad ECUs some '89s come with have a pink sticker on them.

The timing belt might be off too. Just something to consider.

    Good luck.

The second car is identical to the first, so I should be able to switch parts until the problem goes away. Just wanted to know where to start.

I started digging down to the timing belt (having done this on earlier dl's) and it looks like the damper pulley has to come off first. Also, I rurned the engine over looking for timing marks on the distributor drive gear, but saw none. I'm almost sure there's a way to index this gear, or is the distributor pulled and timed by rotor position?? I tried to pull the distributor and it seems to be stuck in the block; so I gave up.

The so called "bad" ECU is the one with a pink label and the last three digits are 561.

Mine worked well, but I bought a replacement anyway. I believe the replacement unit last three digits are 951. Also some have reported that ECUs ending in 556, 933 and 571 will workk too in a 1989.

A spare ECU and a spare AMM are both very good to have around, for diagnosis purposes but also just in case yours fail.

      Good luck.

My 89 240 had a 556 ecu go bad. I replaced it with a 933 from a 91 740. I had the same rough start problem as well as bad fuel economy with the 556. 933 solved all that.
