Hello Brickster -

Both tail lights on my 1997 965 have damage. On the right, the white back-up lens is cracked. On the left, the bottom red brake/marker lens is cracked nd a piece is missing.

I am faced with three choices:

(1) Leave them be.
(2) buy new units at some $180 a side (not a viable solution).

(3) Replace both sides with Units from 1996 965, which supposedly fit also the 1997 965, and older 945 and 745. The turn signal lens is amberm mine is white.
There is a pair on eBay for about $112 including shipping.

(4) Use a lens replacement. There is on eBay a set for about $45 per side.

The price comparison favors the lens replacement. Plus, that solution would retain the red - white - white - red lenses now on the car.



Have you any experience with replacing a tail light lens (not the 240 back-up, BTDT).

What is required to get the old lens off? Preparing the surface (chemicals)?

I would expect that the replacement lens would go in OK with Marine Sealant.

(4) Use

White backup lens can be bought separately for about $10. Do that for the right.

Left lens ... 2-part clear epoxy, then repaint with translucent red. If the search was actually working, I written an article a while back on doing it.

Went back and checked eBay. the lights are presented as new. Hmmmm. Means to me that they are dangerous to the wallet. Promise the moon and deliver manure. Maybe like the one in your well-done picture.

So - some other solution.

Back-up light lens. I was aware of the 240 lens availability. Is the 965 lens a dealer item? fpcgroton? eBay?

I looked in "Search" and saw many of your posts, but not one that explained more fully what you mean about use of epoxy on the red lens.

Part of the lens, maybe a 2 square inch piece, is absent. Not available to re-glue. Will the expoy become a form-able plastic "patch" ? Then paint it?

Your experience is very helpful.
