Substitute & Interchangeable Parts for Volvos--Looking for a unified posting here 700

I'm looking for a special forum addition where there might be a list of parts from other vehicles that can be used in or on a volvo either the 240 series or the 740 series volvos. Maybe we can have an actual addition to the FAQ section?

I talked with a guy from the westcoast who used Chevy Camaro Rear coils and cushions on the rear of his 1984 Volvo 240... he called it his CAMARO RIDE! The stock springs were small and mild in comparison to the camaro Springs. The back sat up a bit more than stock but the fitment worked.

I'm looking for a list here... maybe we can get the ADMIN involved in making a list of interchangable parts. I found a site for the Triumph TR6's that had Substitute & Interchangeable Parts List and most of the Volvos from that era and older interchanged with them!

Please let us ALL KNOW

Everything you've got!

Wheels to Sunroof trim gaskets! What have we found that fits in place of OE Volvo parts

If you get this assembled in good order, I can place it in the FAQ as appropriate.

Mid-80's Chevy Citation II Blower motors (with AC, PN 35588) are an exact-fit for 740 blower motors, though they need to have a ground wire attached to their motor body.

Also, I think that the heater valves interchange with some for heavy-duty Ford vans, but not sure of the details.

It would be nice to put a FAQ section together listing alternative parts that can be substituted.

<< heater valves interchange with some for heavy-duty Ford vans, but not sure of the details >>

The substitute heater valve is made by Motorcraft, and has the Ford part number YG136. There's one in my 945. Made of metal and plastic, it is more robust than the all-plastic aftermarket valves.

An on-line parts fiche sure would be nice.

Might be splitting hairs here, but YG-136 is the Motorcraft part no. The Ford no. is D4AZ-18495-A. It has minor differences from the OE Volvo item. The vacuum stub lacks the slight bend in it to orient the tubing as does the original, and that stub is very slightly smaller diameter. Probably not significant.

What is significant is its price at about $18 (at Rock Auto). Bought through a Volvo dealer the OE item would be a lot more.

Sorry to gravedig, but for many items, IPD and other sites have done the work for us, but are not in an organized format for us to access easily.

    Some more interchangeable stuff...

rex-regina equipped Volvo share the same idle stabilizer as mid 80's Audi 5000's, also share the same coils as tho 2.0 litre Renault Alliance GTA's.

I created a model data web site a few years ago to partially address this issue. I tried to list every model Volvo ever made and what tranny and engine it came with. This is not detailed enough for what you want but it is a start. I agree with you that a simple list of parts and what models they fit would be super.

The hubcap rings of a ford granada looks great on the steel 14" 240 and early 740.
Ford granada foglamps are nearly identical as the optional top-of-the-bumper 240 foglamps

The 140 windshield fits the 240 shell if you add a 1 cm shim underneath (the 140 windshield is sligtly smaller than the 240)

If you are very tall, the 262 bertone seats are the best for you if you drive a 240. They are lower and leather covered although not everyones taste.

I bought a 82 240 GLT wagon with wheels from a Ford Tarus SHO. (looked pretty nice actually). Early 90's Honda Accord or Civic (driver side-windshield pillar mount) antennas make a great replacement for broken 240 or 740 wagon units.

Taurus wheels, SHO or not, are not direct fit to a 240, 740, 940, or most 960 models. They are an FWD offset, and need spacers to properly fit on most RWD Volvos.

Uh, gee, the in-tank pump for a 240 is the same as the Delco maim fuel pump from a Chevette, but the part number I have is dead as far as I know. The cruise vacuum pump for a 240 (90-93) is the same as a Saab, a Volvo 740, Volvo 850. Thats it for me on this thread.

There must be a catalog or a book of parts for other cars. Why not the Volvo?

Volvo has been using lots of parts from other manufacturers - Wagner brakes in my 544.

        All auto manufacturers do.

My first car was a 1960 SAAB. I went to a foreign parts store to get new Hella windshield wiper blades, The price was something like $25 - when I went WOW, the guy checked his book again and told me that they were $8.

As he rang up the sale, he told me that $25 was the Mercedes Benz price!
