Roaring fan 200 1982

Brickers-

I would like to hear why my belt driven thermostatically controlled cooling fan roars loudly during the first half mile or less after cold start. The clutch resistance is higher cold than when shut down after a hard drive. Yet it quiets up soon after 1/2 mile or so and does roar again if things get hot idling in traffic. I never hear anyone elses brick make as much head-turning noise as my 82DL does leaving the complex in the morning.

Thanks Craig.

    Okay...

You've all given me the service manager's shrug and effectively said "they all do that". And if this is so, the cold clutch must have some purpose which escapes me in explaining the "why" in my question.

Maybe mine is a bit worse than others. I am grateful for the responses. Anyone have a clue how the clutch works to describe this ditch-shaped temperature response curve? How does the bimetal sensor work with or against the fluid coupling?

    Thanks Craig.

It's part of the charisma of 240's! Both ours do that, but the fan roar usually abates by the time you catch second or third gear.

    IT's normal, see the Faq's : http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/Cooling.htm#Thermostatic_Fluid_Clutch_Test

My 82DL does the same. I use it to frighten animals and small children out of my way when I'm driving off in the morning! :)

I think the viscous oil in there is locked up cold, then as it warms up slightly it unlocks, then locks again at high heat. My old pickup does the same, except it's swinging a much larger 5 blade fan and is even louder.
