'96 960 cooling fan problems S90-V90

Help, I'm having problem with the radiator cooling fan. It works fine when the engine is cool, get into hot "creaping" traffic and it stops working. I was going to put in a manual switch until I discovered it requires a 50 amp circuit. It's starting to look like a short in the wire.

Has anybody else had this problem?

I think I found the problem. The cooling fan stops working when hot, cool the car down and it works fine. Verified by adding a bypass switch

ordered a replacement fan $127

Hope this fixes the problem

The fan power is controlled by a set of relays just in front of the battery. The relays in turn are controlled by the ECU.

I'm just taking a wild guess here but, the two speed fan controls may be broken such that when the high speed is called for because of heat, that circuit is dead.

If you don't have the Volvo wiring diagram for your car I strongly recommend you get one as it will save you many times over the $30.00 it will cost you. See the links in the manual section of the 700/900 FAQs for the place to get one.

Another possibility is that your fan is on the way to dying and the high speed connections are dead. My fan died because the small ball bearing at the front siezed.

Hope this helps.

jbowers,
The dealer checked out the relay and said it worked. The fan has 3 wires, black, red green. The black is ground, the red is power, what's the green, low speed?

I ran a lead from the battery to the red, the fan came on, I did not test the green lead.

Any sources for a cheap replacement fan? Mine gets current but doesn't run, so I assume that it's dead. At the same time, it's never seemed to affect the car's perforance. Is it necessary?

I purchased a new aftermarket fan last year for $124.75 (including ship/handling. Looks like the price went up a bit.

The fan has held up well.

Good Luck!

An all-aluminum engine does not like overheating. Trust us, do you think the Volvo engineers would bother with a fan if it didn't require one?

mrad, yes you need a fan, the engine will over heat without it.

Do any "generic" GM fans fit the 960s?
