Has Anyone tried the Motive Power Bleeder? 900

I've got 4 cars to maintain and was thinking about buying a Motive Products Power Bleeder. I was wondering if anyone in this forum has any experience with these units and, in particular, using one on the 960 with anti-lock brakes.

The product web site:
http://www.motiveproducts.com/index.html

Reading the manufacturers website makes it sound easy as cake, but I would love to hear any real-world comments and or criticisms, and any praise that might help me make a decision as to whether or not this product is worth the money.

Thanks in advance for replies.
kkoch

Atmospheric pressure on an average day is about 14.2 psi. So, if someone is concerned about the 10 psi working pressure of the Motive Power bleeder forcing air into the brake line, they logically should be more concerned with atmospheric pressure forcing air into the fluid through the reservoir cap on any given day.

    just my $.02

I have used the MPB on our 95 960 and our 98 S90, both have ABS and the MBP worked great! Fast, efficient, one man operation. The only way to go.

I used the bleeder and it works fine as a one-person operation; Used it on a '97 960 with abs and I don’t think you need to worry about forcing air into the fluid; you just don’t create enough pressure to cause that to happen; Couple of hints:
Use a turkey basted and suck out as much of the old fluid as you can--there will be a separate reservoir that you can’t reach; however, as you add new fluid, it will cause a spill-over that will diluted the old stuff; take your time and don’t forget to keep the reservoir topped off as you remove the old fluid. I always start at the closest wheel to the abs braking system. Oh yes, I always justify my purchases of new tools by telling my wife “what it would have cost to have the dealer do it.” Works every time

Over 30 years I've found brake bleeding inextricably entwined with potential threats to marital bliss. For many of those years asking for help with the pedal was the worst of it.

Then, I thought I had a better mousetrap by connecting clear tubing and a hand vacuum pump through a mayonnaise jar fluid receptacle, however I pumped more air from around the bleeder screw threads than fluid into the jar.

When I "borrowed" the garden sprayer to apply pressure, I caused more damage to the bliss factor, and finally last year, nary an eyebrow was raised at spending $40 for that nice, compact, dedicated pressure bleeder Motive puts together.

If it wasn't for the useful coolant cap adapter on the garden sprayer, I could consider returning it now...

    kkoch,
I have used mine a couple of times and it is a great tool. I just wish I had known about it when I had my Saab 9000 and had to power bleed the clutch slave cylinder using a spare tire and jury-rigged valve on the brake fluid resevior. On the other hand, without that frustration I may have never found the lovely Volvo world. Buy one, you will not be disappointed.

Great product that solves a lot of brake rebuilding and bleeding problems. If you have more than one car to maintain, go for it.

I have used a Motive Power bleeder on a number of Volvos (and other cars using the adapter kit) and have had no issues whatsoever. It makes brake bleeding easy enough that my 13 year old son has used it on what will someday become "his" 240. Definitely worth the money, and maybe the best $40 or so you'll ever spend on a tool.

I got mine this winter and have done two cars (240s, both non-ABS). It made bleeding brakes very, very easy. I found that 10 psi was more than adequate pressure, but because I'm a pessimist I secured the fluid reservoir with zip-ties anyway.

I recently read this, though. Don't know what it is worth, but I intend to keep using mine regardless. Could 10 psi cause this problem??

"Like the professional units, these imitations contain a pressure vessel into which new brake fluid is poured. However, in order to pressurize the fluid, an integral pump handle is cycled to build the pressure inside the vessel without any measures taken to separate the pressurized air from the fluid. For those of you who have ever bought a $19.95 do-it-yourself potted plant and bug sprayer from Home Depot you get the idea.
Of course, having pressurized air in contact with the brake fluid will certainly force the fluid through the system just as effectively as the high-zoot professional unit, but as an added bonus we are stuffing air into the brake fluid at the same time. Talk about an unwanted surprise!"

      Pure Poppy-cock! 900

What a line of crap! The reason manufacturers might store brake fluid in a vacuum (if indeed they even do) would be to keep it from absorbing moisture from the air.

By the way, I have a Motive bleeder. And it's the best $50 you'll ever spend on a tool.

Just my 2 cents... arguably worth that.

I have used the Motive power bleeder for the last two years on cars ranging from a VW bug to a V70T5 ( with a TR4 thrown in for good measure). I have never had "air stuffed " into the brake fluid. I would guess the " stoptech " writer must have shaken the H*** out the container while he was bleeding the system ( I have not read the web page). But unless you do that on purpose or shake up the brake fluid container (which you are nor supposed to do) prior to filling the brake reservoir or the power bleeder I believe he ( the writer ) is just whistling Dixie.

      hmmmmmm.......

Possible air infiltration due to the pump......

.....or wife claiming I'm yelling at her as she slams the car door and heads for the house.

How much air could be forced into the fluid at 10psi?
