overdrive problems 200 1988

i recently took my car ('88 240DL) in for the state inspection and the mechanic gave it back to me with a non-functioning overdrive. he told me that it wasn't his fault (of course) and that the solenoid was broken.

i know the guy messed around with the transmission lever so i think he may have actually just broken the switch (the red arrow stays lit on the dash) but i dont know anything about the OD or tranny so i would really appreciate any tips on what to do now....

Inspection Techs are responsable for their actions based on NC State inspection folks that blew up BMW trannies during tests and blamed software. Courts say they are totally responsable for ANY damage done during the inspection process (this after several cars were damaged during dyno tests due to incorrect install of securing device).

Fix it and hand the state or the station the bill. If not paid promptly file for 3X damages and cost of rental during repairs.

Click here to read about a variety of problems that could prevent the overdrive from engaging.

If your mechanic was working in the vacinity of the shifter he could have damaged the switch or wiring to the overdrive relay. The overdrive relay in your car is located behind the dash just to the left of the glove box opening. You access it by removing the glove box. It is a white relay about 1"x1"x2".

The switch completes a circuit that provides a momentary 12v to the relay which in turn will complete the circuit to the solenoid enabling the OD.

Repeated plunging of the switch or drastic shifter stalk movement can break the wires to/from the switch or break the switch itself.

I've seen asshole inspection techs downshift into low at full throttle and also shift into rev or park during the test due to stupidity or lack of knowledge of the trans.
