EGR Valve/System - Removable? 200 1991

Hi,

Just an off-the-wall question: Is the EGR system on a 1991 240 removable if the car is not in CA? According to my Bently manual, only CA cars had the EGR. We picked this one up used in VA about 3 years ago, and have replaced a number of EGR parts during that time. Now we're getting EGR-related faults again--and I'm wondering if I can simply remove the system . . .

Any BTDTs would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Steve A-

The answer is yes, and no. Before you consider making it permanent (after going on the premise that 49 states didn't use it), disconnect and plug the hose to the valve and drive the car on regular grade fuel for a week or two to be sure it does not ping.

The EGR equipped Volvos used a different ECU and may have a different timing curve based on the assumption that a working EGR system exists.

Or you could disconnect and then use the common 49 state ECU to make it right.

What does the EGR System do or provide?

Common misconception is that the EGR Valve is simply an Emissions Control device, and who the heck cares about Greenhouse Gases, anyway.

Did you know that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation System allows the Combustion Chamber to be cooled and helps to inhibit Pinging?

Personally, I do not screw with anything the Engineers put into the design, unless I am going to race the car on a track. But, that's me.

I have repaired mine. My car used to ping like heck, when I first bought it.

Steve:

If you are in a State that does emissions inspections, like North Carolina, they will look to see that the parts are there. They will care less if they work or not, but they have to be there. On old Fords in NC, the common trick is to put a block off plate between the manifold and the EGR valve, but you have to put the valve back on... along with it's lines. In short, the state looks at the VIN and it must at least have the emissions hardware in place that it was born with....
