need some help to decide 900

I need to buy a used Volvo for my sister. I have to decide will it be a 92 940GL
or a 90 740GL.
I don't know what will be better in the long run?

You will probably want to get the later model car. They will both run about the same amount of time and miles because they both have the same engine and trans for the most part. The big difference is going to be the overall condition of the vehicle. If, for whatever reason, the 940 is beat down and the 740 is in really nice shape then go for the 740. Which ever way you go you will want to pick up the cleanest, best maintained one of the two of them and if you are not into Volvo's then I suggest you take your choice to a COMPETENT Volvo mechanic BEFORE you lay your hard earned money on the line.

I know the ‘92 940GL has the B230F and I think the ’90 740GL has the same. For longevity and easier maintenance it is of my opinion that these are the better engines. Either car would be fine but I would go for the ’92 940. Reasons, two years newer and better creature comforts.

I would recommend that you get a $100 pre-purchase inspection at a Volvo independent if at all possible.

Service Records...
If no records... Get it checked by a professional...

Condition of Exterior

Condition of Interior

Dont go by price. I own a pair of 91 940's Neither had service records. One I paid $3000 and the other I paid $700, other than color you cannot visably tell the difference. I got the one for $700 because the owner would not take it to a dealer that could diagnose the problem and took it to a local shop. They replaced just about everything then the owner said enough and dumped it... I replaced the RPM sensor... And it is a better car than the one I spent $3000 to buy..
