960 transmission (loud clunk-like noise when shifting for P to R, P to D, etc.) 900 1995

When i shift out of park, regardless of what gear i am going into, i hear a loud thump. It's not only when i shift out of park, but when i go from reverse to drive and so on, however, it doesnt happen when i shift from, say, Drive to 2nd (which is understandable).

My question is, what is this problem, does it pose any real risk other than an annoying noise (will the trans drop out of the car, lol), and if it does pose a risk, what is a realistic estimate to get it fixed?

Thanks in advance

Does it make the noise when car is standing still? If yes, have a helper stand beside the car while you "make the noise".

Ask if the sound seems to come from under the car, and whether it's middle or rear.

That sound used to be the sound of too much slack (read: wearing out) in the Universal joints. On a 960, I'm not certain.

Moving tranny from no gear (P) to a gear (R), or from (R) to (D) causes shaft totake up slack in the opposite direction from where it was. From (D) to (2) is not a change in direction, thus no noise.

good Luck,

Bob

A worn tranny mount can cause that. Check the engine mounts too ... when one goes, usually the others are not too far behind.
