speaker installation help!! 200 1991

Hello All,
Yesterday I had a new CD player/radio put in...
was going to have new speakers also, but the guys
couldn't get the old, stock speakers off! They
said the grille was riveted in, or something??
Anyone else run into this problem?? This was a
good store with experienced people, not a Best
Buy or anything like that. I need some advice
before i let anyone else try it. Thank you
in advance for any help. Oh yeah...it's a '92
240 sedan. greygrl

    My Solution: 200 1991

I cut the old speakers out of the mount with a cutting wheel. Then I enlarged the center hole a little bit. After this, you can mount a standard 4 inch speaker behind the metal plate and the screws will all match up. This enables you to keep the stock speaker look, but with much nicer newer speakers.

The grilles are removeable but the speakers are mounted on a metal backplate which is rivited in. The rivets can be drilled out, but the mounting hole spacing is non-standard.

Personally I think the stock speakers are quite good - but I know people like quite loud stereo's these days. The stock speakers are I think rated 25w RMS which makes 100 watts in all - quite loud IMHO.
