1992 960 sedan Parking brake failure 900 1992

Recently I went to apply my parking brake and I heard a pop and the handle lost resistance. I think the parking brake cable has broken, but I'm not sure. I'm getting noise from both rear wheels while driving, i didnt have the noises from before. Is it possible that the cables are still okay but hardware with the parking brakes themselves have gone bad? Anyone out there have this problem before? Any tips/suggestions/stories much appreciated. Thanks.

It is very possible that the friction material has broken free of the shoes due to rust! Im working on my E-brakes right now for that problem.
