Are a non turbo fuel assembly/pump (8 valve) interchangable with a fuel assembly/pump (turbo), please help!!!!! 700

Hello guys!

I really need to know whether or not a fuel pump assembly from a 1986 turbo wagon (8 valve) interchangable with a non turbo 8 valve motor. I need to swap out the non-turbo wagon's fuel assembly/pump from inside the tank. I have a fuel assembly/pump from a DONOR 1986 740 gle turbo wagon (A.T. AW-70). I want to replace the current fuel assembly/pump from my 1988 740 gle non-turbo wagon. The steel return line on the 88 is leaking badly. Will the pump from the turbo wagon be too much psi for the non-turbo? Would I have to modify anything if I were to install the turbo fuel assembly onto the non-turbo 8 valve application? The top of both of the assemblies itself are very similar in terms of wiring, lines/connections, even the pump size/setup, its just that it is a turbo one, please help!!! The dealers could not even help me! Other than to state that the numbers between the two are different.

1988 740 gle wagon (non-turbo) 8 valve AW-70 A.T. WELL CARED FOR CURRENTLY 433,000 ORIGINAL MILES.

Best Regards!

Determining cross compatibility between Turbo & non-Turbo fuel pumps in '86 and '88 740s. 700

The dealers could not even help me! Other than to state that the numbers between the two are different.

The first step in determining cross compatability like this is to check with the dealership and get the part numbers (which you've done). If the part numbers are different, call your local NAPA, AutoValue, AutoZone, etc, and ask them to look up the parts in their database and get the part numbers from both of those units. If the aftermarket part numbers are the same, you stand an excellent chance of being able to swap the two different Volvo parts and not break/burst/damage anything.

I just did this with a '91 940 Turbo with a blown fuel pump just two months ago. I had a spare pump from an '86 Turbo sitting at home, the dealership part numbers were different, but the aftermarket no-name brand pumps from NAPA had the same part numbers. I then assumed that if they could supply a single pump that would meet the demands of both vehicles, then I would probably be ok making the swap. However, installing a non-turbo fuel pump into a turbo car would be a different story and I probably wouldn't do that except for a temporary fix (the Turbo needs a higher volume and flow).

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

I looked into this once and my recollection is that all LH fuel pumps (these cars are both LH) are the same part no.
