front seat cushion grinding down....how to protect it??? 700 1986

WOOO-HOOO!! Just scored a passenger side seat cushion in primo shape and with the correct 'hound's tooth' upholstery. fits my 86 745. The cushions presently installed are crumbling or wearing from underneath (cushion dust accumulates under the seat).
Now for the question. I can remove the cushion without taking the seat out of the car. BUT what should I place under the cushion and on top of the metal grid to protect the foam?
I have heard of using astroturf or some rug material....what have you all used?
gracias,
el raidman

Just a word of CAUTION. Be sure the seat height is all the way up. If the seat is set down low and you accidentally hit the height adjust lever the frame will spring out and do some nasty stuff to your fingers if they're in the wrong place.

I didn't do it to my seat but I would go with something thin as Steve mentions. Too thick and the Springs wont work at all and your head will hit the roof. I was almost considering a Beach bag. You know, one of those canvas like bags to throw towels in? That would be encompass the whole cushion and be strong enough so the Grid wont dig through. Just a thought.

Absolutely, take the seat out.

Unplug the Heater, follow the plug under the carpet. Pinch the sides and pull. Don't take the whole seat bracket from the car body, look up a bit higher and find the 13mm nuts. So much easier to just take it out and put it back at the Tracks.

It's a lot, lot easier to spend another fifteen minutes to pull the seat and work on it outside: that way you can do a sterling job.

The wire can cut the foam and the sides of the upholstery can separate to allow the seat to sink. Use a thin piece of carpet to prevent the foam from being cut from below. Make sure the side upholstery is not torn at the stitches. Use zipties instead of hog rings to reinstall.

OK, will pull out the seat. Which type of carpet do you recommend? Which side of the carpet faces the springs?
thanks again,

Well, I'd recommend a nice Persian in wool/silk...

No, seriously, it really doesn't matter: it's a thin (not a high-pile) carpet with a stiff backing that will work. All you want to do is give the foam enough support so it does not get squeezed down below the springs. Go to a carpet store and get one of those sample pieces for $2 or so and cut to fit.
